One of the most creative, inspired, and inspiring books in its field, this work offers extended reflections on what makes for effective psychotherapy. The author, Hellmuth Kaiser, trained at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute in the 1920s, where his analyst was Gustav Bally and his supervisors were Karen Horney, Sándor Radó, Wilhelm Reich, and Hanns Sachs. He then continued with further analytic work at the world’s first psychoanalytic clinic, Berlin’s Sanatorium Schloss Tegel, directed by Ernst Simmel. Kaiser’s career and life, like those of his colleagues, were radically impacted by the coming into power in Germany of the National Socialist Government and the establishing of the Third Reich, in which Freudian analysis was systematically uprooted in Europe; Kaiser left Germany in 1933. In his later years, after teaching at the Menninger Clinic, yet no longer considering himself a psychoanalyst, he shifted from psychoanalytic theories and practices and instead focused on the treatment process itself. Kaiser’s writings in this work, first published in 1965 but later out-of-print for decades, offer us a sourcebook in a challenging, thoroughly non-dogmatic, open-minded questioning of processes in psychotherapeutic interactions to be observed no matter which school or tradition of therapy we adopt. This edition contains the full text of the first edition along with new essays to bring the reader up to date with current ideas and reflections on the powerful vision offered to us by Hellmuth Kaiser; offered as well are two new significant translations from the German: (1) the 1934 critique by Kaiser’s analyst, Gustav Bally, of the relationship of Carl Gustav Jung to the then-newly-Nazified world of German psychotherapy, and (2) the German-language interview in 1958 of Kaiser by Kurt Eissler, the founder of the Sigmund Freud Archives, only released from closed files and made available in 2013, carried out here making focused use of the original 1958 reel-to-reel audio recording of the interview.Reviews found on the book’s first pages act as a further invitation to this unusually creative and inspiring therapist.
